Gentle giants in the high forest: architectural artistry with a heart
Deeply rooted in the Alpine building tradition… it was the “Troadkasten”, the iconic local version of a granary, that provided the driving impulse. Though strong, convincing innovation pervades each, from the foundations up to the roof ridge. And clearly tangible in every corner, the charm of the builder himself, who feels: “If you don’t take design out of the hands of the architect at just the right time, the final nuances are simply lacking.
This combination convinced the jury of the Central Association of Austrian Architects to award Robert Hollmann their 2018 Developers’ Prize for his “gentle giants on the Turracher Höhe”. In collaboration with a Klagenfurt-based architectural firm, he created places of pure pleasure, places that have nothing in common whatsoever with those alpine “little boxes” you encounter so frequently elsewhere.
Different is beautiful – houses for individualists
Franzi, Luki and Toni are the names of the three “huts”, each of which has turned out as individual and different as the Hollmann kids they were named after. Also joined by the “Barn”, a multifunctional community space – to create a village ensemble that sets itself refreshingly apart from all that is old and dustily familiar.
