The cultural milieu

Paris, a city for all the senses

Paris – what can we add when it comes to the cultural milieu? US author M. J. Rose writes: “I think Paris smells not just sweet but melancholy and curious, sometimes sad but always enticing and seductive. She’s a city for the all senses, for artists and writers and musicians and dreamers, for fantasies, for long walks and wine and lovers and, yes, for mysteries.”

The island - a place for artists

Charles Baudelaire chose Île Saint Louis to be his home, Paul Claudel lived and wrote here, and Georges Pompidou withdrew to this island when he wanted to put as much distance as possible between himself and big-time politics. Acclaimed artists have left their traces on this island. And whenever we cross one of the five bridges over the Seine, we are just a few steps away from the nearest museum, concert hall, gallery. The great names await us – Louvre, Centre Pompidou … along with over one thousand galleries of contemporary art (a little of which also seeped into Robert Hollmann’s residence).

Music is in the air

Opera fans can choose between the traditional Palais Garnier and the new Opéra de la Bastille, barely a quarter-hour away from our pied à terre. Musicals, big concerts, the Olympia, the intimate atmosphere of jazz bars, from Manouche to Free Jazz … Barely a single evening passes when having to choose from the almost infinite selection of cultural highlights doesn’t represent a delightfully agonizing torment. And we have yet to mention artistry on a smaller scale, from the painters and musicians along the banks of the Seine to the cabarets of Montmartre …
